Description of Course:
We will be focusing on reading comprehension and writing using a balanced literacy model. Over the course of the year we will examine various genres (fiction and non-fiction) through writing and reading. Our first unit will involve writing a personal memoire. Students will also be expected to read two books of their choice each marking period.
Goals:
To meet New York State standards for literacy curriculum, including:
· Reading and responding to literature
· Mastering the stages of the writing process
To prepare students for the New York State ELA exam
Grading Policy:
Grades are determined as follows:
§ 30% Projects
§ 10% Homework (children will be given homework almost every day, including weekends)
§ 30% Journals
§ 30% Class work assignments
Class Rules:
The following rules were discussed and decided upon in class. In class students will always be:

· Prepared
· Making an Effort
